Antimicrobials & Disinfectants

Antimicrobials and Disinfectants are substances that are applied to destroy microorganisms that are living on various objects. Disinfection doesn’t always kill all microorganisms, especially when there are bacterial spores present. Disinfectants are different from other antimicrobial agents, which destroy microorganisms within the body, and antiseptics, which destroy microorganisms on living tissues.

The Food & Drug Administration has established certain criteria to be considered for topical antimicrobials:

1.     The product should be fast-acting or act within 15 seconds.

2.     The product should have widespread action against various bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

3.     The effectiveness of the product should improve with repeated use.

4.     A kill time study should demonstrate that >99% of the germs are killed within 15 seconds.

There are many different ingredients that are used to provide antimicrobial and/or disinfectant properties including quaternary ammonium salts, alcohol, chlorine derivatives, iodine, and triclosan.
